Those who believe that SSM has less to do now that the mines have closed are very much mistaken. At SSM we have around 45 employees who ensure that mineral extraction (mostly from natural gas, petroleum and salt) in the Netherlands and on the Dutch sector of the continental shelf is carried out safely. This is a role that requires not just great technical expertise, but also a sense of responsibility, as mineral extraction is not without its risks. Accidents can have grave consequences for both health and the environment.
Three sections within SSM are responsible for carrying out the main tasks of inspection and advising: Operations, Engineering and Geo-engineering. In addition, the commercial bureau provides administrative support.
