A number of caves in the past carved out of the marl in South-Limburg are an important tourist attraction. Every year thousands of people make a trip through the caves. Christmas markets and exhibitions are also held there, mushrooms cultivated and tracks laid for mountain bikes and quads. The people in charge of the caves are responsible for ensuring that the tunnels and passageways are safe and that there is no hazard of the cave collapsing. SSM monitors the (rock mechanic)safety of the caves. This supervision will be taken over by the Province of Limburg within a few years. In preparation of this takeover, an SSM inspector has been seconded to the province Limburg for a period of three years.
